About fine lines & wrinkles

Not all wrinkles are the same, and the difference decides the treatment. A line that appears only when you frown is held by a muscle. A line that is there when your face is still has been etched into the skin itself. A fold that deepens with age usually reflects lost volume underneath the skin. Each responds to a different approach, and treating the wrong cause produces disappointing results.

Four things drive most lines:

  • Muscle movement. Frowning, squinting and raising the brows crease the skin in the same place thousands of times a day. Over years the crease starts to stay.
  • Collagen and elastin loss. From the late twenties onward the skin produces less of the fibers that keep it firm and springy, so it recovers from creasing more slowly.
  • Sun exposure. Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen faster than age alone and is the single largest controllable factor in how skin ages.
  • Volume loss. Fat pads and bone in the face change with age. As support beneath the skin lessens, the skin above it folds.

Lifestyle contributes: smoking, dehydration, poor sleep and repeated weight change all show in the skin over time.

Not all fine lines & wrinkles are the same

Different lines need different treatments. Your provider will identify which types you have and build a plan around the cause.

1

Dynamic expression lines

Caused by repeated muscle movement: forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, crow's feet. Visible when you make an expression and faint or absent at rest. The most responsive type.

2

Static lines

Present when your face is still. Many begin as expression lines and set in over time; others come from sun damage and thinning skin. Fine static lines around the eyes and mouth are common.

3

Folds

Deeper creases that follow the structure of the face: nasolabial folds beside the nose, marionette lines at the corners of the mouth. Usually tied to volume loss rather than muscle movement.

4

Skin-quality lines

The fine, crepey texture that appears on sun-exposed, dehydrated or thinning skin: cheeks, under the eyes, the neck and chest. A surface problem more than a structural one.

Treatment options for fine lines & wrinkles

The treatments below are the ones we use most for lines and wrinkles, grouped by the kind of line they address. Most plans combine one option from the first group with one from another.

For expression lines: wrinkle relaxers

FDA-approved neuromodulators temporarily soften the muscle activity that creases the skin, so expression lines ease and new creasing is reduced while the treatment is active. Results typically appear within days and last around three to four months; Daxxify® results can last up to six months. Individual results vary.

  • Botox®: the most widely used option, with the longest track record.
  • Dysport®: often chosen for larger areas such as the forehead.
  • Xeomin®: a purified formulation without accessory proteins.
  • Daxxify®: a newer option whose results can last up to six months.
  • Tox Facial: a microdosed, surface-level approach for texture and fine lines rather than deep creases.

For static lines and folds: fillers and biostimulators

When a line remains at rest or a fold has formed, adding support beneath the skin does what a relaxer cannot.

  • Dermal Fillers: FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers that smooth folds and restore lost volume with immediate, adjustable results.
  • Sculptra®: an FDA-approved biostimulator that encourages your own collagen over a series of treatments, for gradual, broad improvement.
  • HD Radiesse: hyperdilute Radiesse® used to improve skin quality and crepey texture across the face, neck and hands.
  • Plasma Injections: your own platelet-rich plasma used to support skin regeneration.
  • SkinVive™: an FDA-approved injectable that improves skin smoothness and hydration in the cheeks.
  • PDO Thread Lift: dissolvable threads that provide subtle lift and stimulate collagen where laxity contributes to lines.

For skin-quality lines: resurfacing and collagen treatments

These treat the skin itself, improving texture and stimulating collagen so fine lines soften over a series.

For maintenance: facials and skin care

  • DiamondGlow®: exfoliation and infusion that improves the look of fine lines and texture between treatments.
  • Medical-grade skin care, including retinoids and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, supports every result above. Journey members receive 10% off skin care.

Lines around the mouth are often treated with a combination of lip filler and a wrinkle relaxer; your provider will advise.

An example plan. An example, illustrative only: someone with movement-related forehead and frown lines might begin with a neuromodulator plus a medical-grade skincare and SPF routine, then reassess. Someone whose main concern is crepey texture might consider a microneedling series alongside skincare. Plans are built in person and adjusted over time. This is an example, not a promise of a specific outcome. Individual results vary.

What a consultation covers

Your provider will:

  1. Watch your face move. Which lines appear with expression and which remain at rest tells us more than any photo.
  2. Assess skin quality, sun damage and volume. The same line can have more than one cause.
  3. Ask about your history: previous treatments, what you liked and did not, medications, and how much recovery time you can give.
  4. Recommend a starting point, with a clear account of what each treatment can and cannot do for your particular lines.
  5. Give you a written plan and its cost before any treatment, with no obligation to book that day.

Most clients start with one treatment and add a second once they see how their skin responds.

When to expect results

Timelines depend on the approach. Movement-related treatments generally show their effect over several days up to about two weeks; collagen-supporting and texture approaches develop more gradually over weeks to months and are often planned as a series. Your provider will set expectations for your specific plan. Individual results vary.

Is treatment right for you?

Candidacy

Most healthy adults with lines that bother them are candidates for at least one option above. Some treatments are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with certain neuromuscular or autoimmune conditions, with active skin infection in the area, or soon after some other procedures. Each treatment page lists its own considerations, and your provider will review your medical history before recommending anything. This page is general information and is not medical advice.

Fine Lines & Wrinkles: questions, answered

What is the difference between fine lines and wrinkles?

Fine lines are shallow and usually appear first, often around the eyes and mouth. Wrinkles are deeper creases that have set into the skin. Fine lines typically respond to lighter treatments; established wrinkles usually need a wrinkle relaxer, filler or resurfacing, and sometimes more than one.

Do I need Botox® or filler for my wrinkles?

It depends on the line. If the line appears when you make an expression and softens at rest, a wrinkle relaxer such as Botox® addresses the cause. If the line is present when your face is still, or it is a fold beside the nose or mouth, filler or a collagen treatment is usually the better fit. Many clients benefit from both, treating different lines.

At what age should I start treating lines?

There is no right age. Some clients begin wrinkle relaxers in their late twenties or thirties, when expression lines first start to linger, which may reduce how deeply they set over time. Others begin later. The better question is whether the lines bother you and whether a treatment can address their cause.

Can wrinkles be removed permanently?

No non-surgical treatment removes wrinkles permanently. Wrinkle relaxers last a few months, fillers from several months to a year or more depending on the product, and collagen treatments build results that are maintained with periodic sessions. A plan is designed to keep results consistent over time rather than to deliver a single permanent change. Individual results vary.

How much does wrinkle treatment cost in Carmel?

Cost depends on which treatment fits your lines, how many areas are treated, and whether you choose a single treatment or a plan. Each treatment page describes what a typical client pays, and your provider will give you a written cost at consultation before any treatment. Journey membership includes CoolPeel® and microneedling, gives members special pricing on wrinkle relaxers, and takes 10% off all other treatments, packages and skin care.

Will treatment make me look frozen or overdone?

Our approach is to treat the cause of a line while keeping natural movement and expression. Dosing is conservative and adjusted to you, and your provider will tell you when to return so results can be reviewed and refined. Individual results vary.

Can fine lines be treated without injections?

Yes. Resurfacing lasers, radiofrequency microneedling, chemical peels and DiamondGlow® all improve fine lines and texture without injections, usually over a series of treatments. They are often the better choice for fine, crepey lines on the cheeks, under the eyes and on the neck. Some lines are better supported by skin care and sun protection first; the plan starts with an assessment, not a product.

How soon would I see a difference?

It depends on the approach: movement-related treatments over days to ~2 weeks, collagen/texture approaches more gradually over weeks to months. Individual results vary.
