What to expect

Before, during and after your BBL (BroadBand Light) appointment at Wise Aesthetics.

Before your treatment
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning (natural or artificial) for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily.
  • Stop using retinoids, glycolic acids, and exfoliating products 5-7 days before treatment.
  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood-thinning medications 7 days before your appointment unless medically necessary.
  • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. Do not apply lotions, oils, or skincare products on the treatment area.
  • Notify your provider if you are taking photosensitizing medications or have a history of cold sores, as antiviral medication may be recommended.
During your treatment

Your skin will be cleansed, and protective eye shields will be applied. A cooling gel may be applied to the treatment area for comfort.

The BBL device delivers light pulses to the skin’s surface, targeting pigmentation, redness, or other skin concerns.

You may feel a snapping or warming sensation with each pulse, but the treatment is typically well-tolerated.

Treatments usually take 15-60 minutes, depending on the size of the area.

After your treatment
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) immediately after treatment and daily thereafter.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 4 weeks.
  • Refrain from hot baths, saunas, and vigorous exercise for 48 hours. Do not use harsh skincare products, including retinoids and exfoliants, for 5-7 days.
  • Use a gentle moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and support healing.
  • You may experience mild redness or warmth, similar to a sunburn, which typically subsides within a few hours.
  • Pigmented spots may darken and flake off over the next 7-10 days.
  • Do not pick at darkened spots or peeling skin; let them naturally slough off.
  • You may experience mild redness, swelling, or darkening of pigment, which resolves in a few days.
Expected results

Initial Results: Improvements in redness, pigmentation, and skin tone can often be seen within 1-2 weeks.

Continued Improvement: Collagen production is stimulated, leading to further improvements in skin texture and elasticity over the following months.

Pigmentation: Brown spots may darken before flaking off, revealing clearer, more even-toned skin.

Individual results vary.

How often to return

A series of 3-5 treatments is typically recommended, spaced 3-4 weeks apart.

Maintenance treatments every 6-12 months may help maintain your results.

  • Well-suited for a quick refresh, offering visible improvements in tone and clarity with minimal effort and recovery.
  • Often chosen by clients seeking more lasting results, a series may further improve the appearance of tone, texture, and overall clarity. Individual results vary.

Please follow the pre-treatment instructions carefully to avoid contraindications. For your safety, failure to do so may result in the inability to proceed with your treatment.

Is BBL (BroadBand Light) right for you?

Your provider reviews your medical history and discusses risks and alternatives with you before recommending treatment.

Who may not be a candidate

This treatment is not suitable for everyone. Tell your provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have had recent sun exposure or a tan, have an active skin infection, cold sore or rash in the area, have a history of keloid scarring, have used isotretinoin, or take medication that makes your skin sensitive to light. Your provider will review your medical history, medications and skin type before recommending treatment.

Risks and side effects

Every light-based treatment carries risk. Common effects include redness, warmth and mild swelling, and pigmented spots often darken before they flake away. Less common effects include blistering, burns, changes in skin color, which can be darker or lighter than the surrounding skin, and scarring. The risk of color change is higher in deeper skin tones and with sun exposure before or after treatment. Your provider will go through the risks that apply to you and answer your questions before you decide.

Individual results vary.

What skin concerns can BBL treat?

BBL may improve the appearance of blemish-prone skin, sunspots, age spots, freckles, visible redness, broken capillaries, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. Individual results vary. It can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands, and other areas of the body to rejuvenate and improve skin clarity.

While many clients notice improvements after one session, a series of 3 to 5 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart is often recommended. Your provider will create a personalized treatment plan based on your specific skin concerns and goals.
