What SkinMedica® Peels treat

Not sure which peel fits? Your provider will look at your skin, ask about your routine and recommend a starting point.

Dull or Tired-Looking Skin

Exfoliating acids lift dull surface cells, which may leave skin looking brighter and more even. Individual results vary.

Uneven Tone & Sun Damage

A series of peels may improve the look of uneven tone from sun exposure. Daily sunscreen matters as much as the peel.

Fine Lines & Rough Texture

The Vitalize and Rejuvenize Peels may soften the look of fine lines and smooth rough texture over a series of treatments.

Breakout-Prone Skin & Acne Marks

Salicylic acid helps clear surface buildup. Peels may improve the look of marks that breakouts leave behind. Individual results vary.

Treatable areas

Face, neck, chest and back. Your provider will advise which areas suit your skin, and may treat the face first to see how your skin responds.

What to expect

Before, during and after your SkinMedica® Peels appointment at Wise Aesthetics.

Before your treatment

One week before

  • Avoid waxing, electrolysis, depilatory creams and laser hair removal in the area.
  • If you have recently had a wrinkle relaxer, wait until it has taken full effect.

Two to three days before

  • Stop prescription retinoids such as tretinoin, adapalene and tazarotene.
  • Stop products containing retinol, alpha or beta hydroxy acids or benzoyl peroxide, and any drying or exfoliating products.

After other treatments

  • If you have had a laser treatment, filler, microdermabrasion or surgery, wait until skin sensitivity has fully settled.

Arrive with clean skin and tell your provider about your medications, allergies and recent treatments.

During your treatment

Your provider cleanses and preps your skin, then applies the peel solution in thin layers. Tingling or warmth is normal and usually fades within minutes, though it can last an hour or two. A handheld fan helps.

The peel is left on when you leave. With the Vitalize and Rejuvenize Peels, a final layer can leave a light yellow tint that fades within one to two hours.

After your treatment

The first evening

  • Wait until bedtime to wash your face, then start moisturizing.

While your skin recovers

  • Use a gentle, soap-free cleanser. Do not scrub, and do not use a washcloth or cleansing device.
  • Moisturize as often as you need to for dryness.
  • Do not pick or pull at peeling skin. Let it come away by itself; pulling it early can leave raw skin and dark marks.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise while your skin is red or peeling.
  • Wear SPF 30 or higher and avoid direct sun for at least one week.

Before restarting other products and treatments

  • Resume retinoids, exfoliating acids and brightening creams only after peeling is complete.
  • Wait until peeling has fully stopped before facials, waxing, laser treatments, wrinkle relaxers or fillers.

Call us if anything worries you, including burning that lasts more than two hours.

Expected results

Illuminize Peel®

Skin usually looks normal the next day, and many clients notice a brighter look after one peel. Visible peeling is not expected, though very light flaking can occur.

Vitalize Peel® and Rejuvenize Peel™

Skin may feel tight and look redder than usual for two to five days. Peeling usually begins about 48 hours after treatment and lasts two to five days. It can range from light flaking to larger sheets of skin.

Not everyone peels visibly. The amount of peeling does not measure how well the peel worked.

Individual results vary.

How often to return

We typically recommend a series of 3 to 6 treatments. SkinMedica's guidance on spacing is every 2 weeks for the Illuminize Peel®, every 3 to 4 weeks for the Vitalize Peel® and every 4 to 6 weeks for the Rejuvenize Peel™. Your provider will set the schedule for your skin.

What SkinMedica® Peels cost

What to expect to pay: The cost depends on which peel your provider recommends and how many treatments are in your plan. Non-members typically spend $350 for a Rejuvenize Peel™ treatment. Journey members receive the Rejuvenize Peel™ as part of their membership, with no limit on the number of treatments. Your provider will confirm your plan and its cost at consultation, before any treatment.

About SkinMedica® Peels

SkinMedica® Peels are a graded series of three chemical peels. Each uses a blend of exfoliating acids to lift dull surface cells and improve the look of tone and texture. Your provider chooses the peel, and adjusts how it is applied, based on your skin and your goals.

Which peel is which

  • Illuminize Peel®: the lightest. Used for mild concerns and first-time peels, for a brighter-looking complexion. Visible peeling is usually none.
  • Vitalize Peel®: the middle strength. Used for mild to moderate concerns such as fine lines, uneven tone and the look of acne marks. Expect mild flaking to peeling for about 2 to 5 days.
  • Rejuvenize Peel™: the strongest. Used for moderate to more pronounced concerns such as lines, roughness and uneven tone. Expect peeling for about 2 to 5 days.

Many clients begin with the Illuminize or Vitalize Peel and move to the Rejuvenize Peel once their skin has shown it tolerates a peel well.

Are SkinMedica® Peels right for you?

Your provider reviews your medical history and discusses risks and alternatives with you before recommending treatment.

Who may not be a candidate

This treatment is not suitable for everyone. SkinMedica® Peels are not recommended if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant. Tell your provider if you have active cold sores or a history of them, warts, open wounds, sunburn, very sensitive skin, dermatitis or inflammatory rosacea in the area, vitiligo, an autoimmune condition, or an allergy to salicylates such as aspirin. Also tell your provider if you have taken isotretinoin in the past year, are having chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or are taking antibiotics. The Rejuvenize Peel™ is generally used on deeper skin tones only after the Vitalize Peel® has been well tolerated. Your provider will review your medical history before recommending treatment.

Risks and side effects

Every chemical peel carries risk. Common effects include redness, tightness, itching, irritation and, with the Vitalize and Rejuvenize Peels, several days of visible peeling. Less common effects include breakouts, a rash, swelling and burning. Changes in skin color, which can be darker or lighter than the surrounding skin, reactivation of cold sores, infection and scarring are possible with any peel. Sun exposure after a peel raises the risk of color change. Your provider will go through the risks that apply to you and answer your questions before you decide.

SkinMedica® Peels questions, answered

Which SkinMedica® Peel is right for me?

Your provider recommends a peel after looking at your skin. The Illuminize Peel® is the lightest and is often chosen for a first peel. The Vitalize Peel® suits mild to moderate concerns. The Rejuvenize Peel™ is the strongest and is usually chosen once your skin has tolerated a lighter peel.

Will my skin peel?

With the Illuminize Peel®, visible peeling is not expected. With the Vitalize and Rejuvenize Peels, peeling usually starts about 48 hours after treatment and lasts two to five days. Some people peel very little, and that does not mean the peel did not work.

How many peels will I need?

We typically recommend a series of 3 to 6 treatments. Some clients notice a difference after one peel. Individual results vary.

How should I look after my skin afterward?

Wash gently, moisturize often, do not pick at peeling skin, avoid strenuous exercise while skin is red, and wear SPF 30 or higher while avoiding direct sun for at least a week. Your provider will give you written instructions.

Can I have a peel if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. SkinMedica® Peels are not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
