Unwanted Hair Treatment in Carmel, Indiana

Unwanted hair on the face and body is reduced at Wise Aesthetics in Carmel, Indiana with laser hair removal, which targets the pigment in the hair follicle to disable it. Because hair grows in cycles, a series of 6 to 8 treatments is typical, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart on the face and 6 to 8 weeks apart on the body, after which most clients see significant, long-lasting reduction with occasional maintenance. It works best on dark hair and is less effective on blond, red, grey or white hair, which has little pigment for the laser to target. Individual results vary.

About unwanted hair

How much hair you have, where it grows and how dark it is are set mostly by genetics and hormones. Hair that is dark and coarse is both the most noticeable and the easiest to treat, because laser hair removal works by sending light into the pigment in the hair, which heats and disables the follicle beneath. Fine, pale hair holds little pigment and responds poorly, which is why the treatment is not a match for everyone.

Hair also grows in cycles, and the laser only affects follicles in their active growth phase. At any moment a portion of the hair in an area is resting or shedding, so one treatment catches only part of it. That is why a series is needed and why the spacing between treatments matters: each visit catches the hairs that have since entered their growth phase.

Skin tone affects settings, not eligibility. Modern lasers treat a wide range of skin tones, but the contrast between hair and skin, and the energy that is safe for the skin, are judged by your provider at consultation.

Not all unwanted hair are the same

Where the hair is, and what it is like, shape the plan.

1

Face: upper lip, chin and jawline

Small areas with coarse, often hormonally driven hair. Treated in 15-minute visits every 4 to 6 weeks; some clients need extra maintenance here because hormones keep recruiting new follicles.

2

Underarms and bikini line

The most requested areas, and among the most responsive, because the hair is dark and coarse. Also where shaving irritation and ingrown hairs are worst, which laser treatment largely ends.

3

Legs, arms, back and chest

Larger areas treated in 30 to 60 minute visits every 6 to 8 weeks. Reduction is significant over a series; some fine regrowth is normal and is caught by maintenance.

4

Fine, light or grey hair

Hair with little pigment, which the laser cannot target well. We will tell you at consultation if this applies to you rather than sell a series that will disappoint.

Treatment options for unwanted hair

One treatment addresses unwanted hair, and the plan is about which areas, how many visits and how they are spaced.

Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal delivers pulses of light absorbed by the pigment in the hair, which heats and disables the follicle so that hair grows back finer and sparser, and in many follicles not at all. Visits take 15 minutes for small areas such as the underarms or upper lip and up to 60 minutes for large areas such as the legs or back. Most clients feel a warm snap with each pulse and find it tolerable; the skin may be pink and slightly swollen around the follicles for a few hours afterward.

A full series is 6 to 8 treatments: every 4 to 6 weeks for the face, every 6 to 8 weeks for the body. With a full series, most clients achieve significant, long-lasting reduction in the treated area. Occasional maintenance visits, typically every 6 to 12 months, address new or dormant follicles. Individual results vary.

Between visits

Shave the area a day or two before each visit, and do not wax, pluck or thread between treatments; the laser needs the hair in the follicle to work. Avoid sun and tanning on the area for the weeks around each visit, and use sunscreen on exposed areas every day.

What we do not offer

We do not offer electrolysis, which is the alternative for light or grey hair. If your hair is not a good match for laser, we will say so.

An example plan. An example, illustrative only: a client bothered by underarm and bikini-line hair might book a series of six treatments six to eight weeks apart, timed to finish before summer, then return once a year for maintenance. These are examples, not a promise of a specific outcome. Individual results vary.

What a consultation covers

Your provider will:

  1. Look at the hair and skin in each area you want treated: hair color and coarseness, skin tone, and any tan.
  2. Tell you plainly whether the hair is a good match for laser. Dark hair on lighter skin responds best; light, red or grey hair does not respond well.
  3. Ask about medications that increase light sensitivity, hormonal conditions that affect hair growth, recent waxing, and any history of keloid scarring.
  4. Set the series: number of treatments, spacing, and how to prepare, including when to stop waxing and when to shave.
  5. Give you a written plan and its cost before any treatment, usually priced per area or per series.

When to expect results

Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks after each visit, and regrowth comes in finer and sparser. The reduction builds with each treatment; most clients see a clear difference by the third or fourth and significant, long-lasting reduction after the full series. Individual results vary.

Is treatment right for you?

Candidacy

Adults with dark hair in the areas they want treated are the best candidates, and most skin tones can be treated with adjusted settings. Treatment may not be appropriate, or may need to wait, if the hair is blond, red, grey or white, you have a tan or recent sun exposure on the area, you are pregnant, you have taken isotretinoin in the past year, you take medications that increase light sensitivity, you have an active infection or cold sore in the area, or you have a history of keloid scarring. Your provider will review your medical history at consultation. This page is general information and is not medical advice.

When we refer you on

Sudden or unusual new hair growth, particularly on the face in women, can have a hormonal cause worth discussing with your physician. We will mention it if the pattern suggests it.

Unwanted Hair: questions, answered

Is laser hair removal permanent?

No treatment removes every hair forever, which is why it is described as long-term hair reduction. After a full series, most clients find the treated area stays largely hair-free, with finer, sparser regrowth that a maintenance visit every 6 to 12 months keeps in check. Individual results vary.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients need 6 to 8 treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart on the face and 6 to 8 weeks apart on the body, because each visit catches only the hairs in their growth phase. Coarse, dark hair often needs fewer; hormonally driven facial hair may need more and more maintenance. Individual results vary.

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe each pulse as a warm snap, like a rubber band, and find it tolerable without numbing. Sensitive areas such as the bikini line and upper lip feel it more. The skin may be pink and slightly swollen around the follicles for a few hours afterward.

Does laser hair removal work on blond, red or grey hair?

Not well. The laser targets pigment in the hair, and light or grey hair has little. We will tell you at consultation if your hair is not a good match rather than recommend a series that will disappoint.

Can you treat darker skin tones?

Yes, with settings adjusted to your skin. The contrast between hair and skin and the energy that is safe for your skin are judged at consultation, and your provider will say if an area is not suitable.

Which areas can you treat?

Most areas of the face and body: upper lip, chin and jawline, underarms, bikini line, legs, arms, back, chest and shoulders. Small areas take about 15 minutes, large areas up to an hour.

How much does laser hair removal cost in Carmel?

Cost depends on the area and whether you book a single treatment or a series; a series is the better value because the result depends on completing it. The laser hair removal page describes what a typical client pays, and your provider will give you a written cost at consultation. Essentials and Journey members receive 10% off.
